RED, WHITE BLUE LAYERED COCKTAIL
06/22/2023It’s Thirsty Thursday and getting close to the 4th of July so let’s get in the spirit with a fun adult cocktail. When my kids were little we made a non-alcoholic red, white and blue layered drink for them. This version is for mom and dad to help ease the tension from hearing the kids ask 24/7 for a week straight to light fireworks.
Ingredients needed are grenadine, blue curacao, a flavored vodka of your choice and lemon-lime soda.
Start with a cocktail glass filled with ice. Add a layer of grenadine. I didn’t measure. I just poured until I got a good layer. Next s-l-o-w-l-y add a layer of blue curacao. You don’t want the layers to mix. For the white layer, add 1/2 ounce of whatever flavor vodka you prefer. Citrus vodka is a good option. I used watermelon because that was the only flavor I had on hand. Finally, slowly top off with lemon-lime soda.
An important point to remember when making layers is the bottom layer should have the highest sugar content and the top layer should have the lowest sugar content. Otherwise, the liquids will mix together and create a purple color.
Yes, my top layer looks more light blue than white but you get the idea. Since I have nixed sugar, I didn’t have regular soda on hand and had to use zero sugar 7-Up. I have seen others make this drink with the white layer in the middle using regular soda.
However you layer the drink, it’s sure to impress your guests with your magic cocktail tricks.
