HOW WE BUILT A POTTING BENCH
09/25/2022My previous potting bench was an old table I rescued from the trash. It’s lasted many years for me but has seen better days and had developed quite a bow in the middle. It was time for an update.
I wanted something with more height and room for decorating in addition to space for actually using it as a potting bench. I looked for ready-made online but nothing was exactly what I was looking for. I knew it was something we could build so I searched for free plans online.
This is what we made from free plans found on Ana-White.com.
Isn’t she pretty? It’s exactly what I had in mind with enough room for potting plants and pretty touches.
I stained the bench with three coats of the same cedar-toned Flood stain I used on the exterior shutters on our house.
It has plenty of hooks for hanging items.
More room for cute outdoor decor on the bottom shelf. See the “ooopsie” we made on the shelf? The slats didn’t get spaced evenly. Oh well, it’s perfectly imperfect.
And a top shelf for even more cuteness.
It’s exactly what I envisioned in this outdoor space. My back patio may be an under construction mud pit right now but this little space near the garage is cute as can be.

Hi Christy,
This potting bench is Adorable! I’ve decided I must have one and I’m going to try and do it without any help, lol.
I have a quick question, does the wood need to be treated if it’s outdoors?
Thanks for your help,
Terri

Hello! Best of luck. You can do it! Yes, I would definitely seal it if if it’s going to be outside. I added three coats to mine just to be safe.
