I had no idea that you could make homemade vanilla extract using only two ingredients until I received this cute bottle from my sister for Christmas. Now I want to make bottles upon bottles to have on hand, use and give as gifts. It would be perfect for birthday, Christmas, new neighbor, bridal shower or wedding, housewarming or just because gifts.
In preparing to make my own, I’ve compiled some helpful info. to keep in mind.
Though vanilla beans are costly, the final cost versus store-bought vanilla extract is a significant savings. Another benefit of making homemade is you know the ingredients are 100% clean. Instead of buying vanilla beans in a grocery store, look online for better values. Etsy and Amazon are good options.
There are different types of vanilla beans all with varying flavor notes. Madagascar vanilla beans are most commonly used in vanilla extract but any type of bean can be used.
Madagascar – classic sweet vanilla flavor.
Mexican – hints floral plus cherry and almond flavor. Ideal for fruity desserts.
Tahitian – hints of spice, specifically cloves and nutmeg.
Ugandan – bold, smokey flavor.
There are two different grades of vanilla beans.
Grade A – can be used for vanilla extract, more expensive, releases flavor more quickly but the flavor is not as strong
Grade B – specifically meant for vanilla extract, less expensive, stronger flavor
The more vanilla beans you use, the more flavorful your vanilla extract. A good rule of thumb is 4 to 6 vanilla beans per 8 ounces of vodka.
Vanilla extract is typically made with 80 proof vodka but you can also use rum (stay away from spiced rums), bourbon or brandy for unique flavors.
There is no need to use expensive alcohol. The cheaper the better for vanilla extract. The flavor comes from the vanilla beans.
Homemade vanilla extract is best stored in glass jars or bottles. You can use 4 oz., 6 oz., 8 oz. or whatever size you would like. Dark glass (amber) bottles help block sunlight. Clear can be used, as well.
There are a variety of cute custom labels that can be purchased to label your homemade vanilla extract. Etsy is a good place to look.
