HOMEMADE BIRDSEED WREATH
01/29/2023This week is for the birds, literally. All this week I will be sharing different homemade bird treat recipes to keep the birds fat and happy this winter. Watching the birds outside my office window makes the work days better so I’ll happily make them treats to keep them coming back. And I’ve learned from experience to put all bird food high enough that the dogs can’t snatch it. Dogs eating suet cakes does not make pretty outcome.
Today I’ll be sharing how to make a birdseed wreath.
You’ll need:
1/2 cup water
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
3/4 cup flour
3 tablespoons corn syrup
4 cups birdseed
NOTE: This recipe makes a thin wreath that fills a bundt pan halfway. I doubled the recipe to fill a bundt pan. This does make the mold heavier so it’s recommended to add half the mixture to a bundt pan, then place a thick circle of wire in the middle before adding the rest of the mixture. This helps hold the final product together longer.
Spray a bundt pan very liberally with nonstick cooking spray. Mix hot water with gelatin in a large bowl until the gelatin is dissolved. Add flour and corn syrup and stir until combined. Finally, add birdseed and stir mixture thoroughly. Add mixture to bundt pan. Spray a small piece of waxed paper with nonstick cooking spray. Use the greased waxed paper to firmly compact mixture in the pan.
Place mold in refrigerator, freezer or outside, if temperatures are below 40 degrees to set for 24 hours. Once set, remove wreath from mold. It should release easily. If not, let sit at room temperature for 15-30 minutes to allow the wreath to soften. Add a ribbon or a burlap tie for hanging wreath.
NOTE: Water will cause the wreath to dissolve. It is ideal to hang in a covered area or take down in the event of rain.
Happy birds, happy work day.
