HALLWAY BATH | BEFORE vs. AFTER
11/02/2021One-by-one and verrrryy slowly each room in the house is getting an update. The hallway bath is small but it’s shared by the two hallway bedrooms and guests when visiting so it gets a lot of use. It looked fine but one faucet leaked and needed replaced, the toilet ran constantly after flushing despite numerous repairs, the grout in the tile floor was crumbling and the tiles were popping up due to being installed directly on top of plywood. January 2, 2021, the day after the holiday decorations came down, the hall bathroom began it’s makeover.
BEFORE:
DURING:
Everything came out – the floor, the vanity, the toilet.
The soffit, the drywall.
The ceiling, the tub/shower.
And the rotted subfloor.
Then is was time to dream up how I wanted it all put back. This is the mood board I initially put together. Keep scrolling to see how close the final product resembled the mood board.
Did I mention my husband had shoulder surgery in the middle of all of this? Thankfully with the help of our son and a one-armed husband, the drywall was replaced and electrical was re-run just in time for the tile guy to take over and make everything pretty.
Here is a pano to give an idea of the small bathroom layout.
I searched and searched for real wood vanity I liked and had no luck so we went the custom route and I finished it myself. This also allowed us to create an odd sized vanity for as much counter space as possible in the small bathroom.
AFTER:
And here is the (almost) finished product. If you look closely, you’ll see trim that still needs to be painted. We are living with the bathroom for a little bit to see if we want keep the door into the small bathroom or go with a sliding barn door, instead.
It’s small (and nearly impossible to photograph) but it packs a punch and I love it.
For those that don’t love using the cute turkish towels, there are plush towels on the back of the door. Did you even know they made UGG towels? I didn’t but TJ Maxx for the win. However, it drives me nuts that I only bought two wash clothes that I used as decor on the shelves. I went back to get a third and I’ve not been able to find the UGG brand or that exact color since. Drives my OCD self crazy not having an odd number but it is what it is. If I waited until everything was perfect, I would have absolutely nothing on the blog.
I like how the shower stool can be used inside or outside of the shower. And how the glass shower wall keeps the tiny space feeling airy and open. I get asked a lot and no, water doesn’t spray out and it’s not too cold without a shower door. Since the bathroom is so small, just closing the bathroom door keeps things nice and warm while showering.
I’ve never had shower nooks before. I do wish we had the spray nozzle in addition to the rain shower head – mainly for bathing the dogs. But I was overruled on that one so I’ll opt for one in the master bath when we get around to remodeling there.
Overall, I think it turned out pretty darn close to the original mood board and I could’t be happier. For a tiny bathroom, it has everything needed in a full bath plus plenty of character. It took 6 months, one re-built shoulder, an awesome tile installer, a custom cabinet builder that took my rough drawings of the vanity and brought it to life and lots of second guessing but it’s done and I’m in love. Slowly but surely this house is becoming home sweet home.
