DIY CLAY HALLOWEEN GHOSTS
09/19/2023Today I have a fun Halloween DIY that ends with the cutest little ghosts. No two look the same which is part of their charm. I wanted something cute to put in my china hutch for a touch of Halloween and these worked perfectly.
You’ll need is white clay, either air dry or oven bake. I used air dry because it’s what I had on hand. If I could do it over again, I would have used oven bake. It’s a little hard to get the air dry clay to keep its shape once the ghosts are formed. It also has to dry for two to three days. Oven baked clay dries much faster which helps the clay not crack and slide off the form. I will be honest. I made five ghosts and only two turned out. One cracked and pulled apart while drying and the other two broke when I tried to take them off the forms. That’s the joy of DIY. Not everything is a success. But the ghosts that did turn out are cute so it was worth it.
To make the ghosts, you’ll need some sort of base for the clay to lay across. Foam balls, ping pong balls, foil rolled into a ball or balloons work well for the head. Small jars that the ball will rest on work well for the base. Keep in mind, if using oven bake clay, items must be oven safe.
Roll out the clay into a thin circle large enough to cover the form.
You can either cut out the holes for the eyes and mouth while the clay is flat or once the ghost is formed. Lay the clay over the form making “folds” in the “sheet”. If the clay circle is too long, extra clay can be cut off with scissors. The ghost sheet should just touch the table.
If small cracks form in the clay, they can easily be smoothed out using a bit of water on a finger or paint brush. If the eyes and mouth haven’t been cutout yet, be sure to do that using a straw, circle piping tip, exacto knife, etc.
Bake according to package or allow to air dry completely, two to three days. Once completely dried, be very careful when removing the ghost from the form.
Place battery operated tea light candles under the completed ghosts for a spooky glow.
