DIY SLEEPYTIME PILLOW SPRAY
06/02/2023What happened to the days when we laid our head on the pillow and slept soundly through the night without waking once? I miss those days dearly! Now I’m lucky to get an hour or two of deep sleep before an ache, pain or the urge to pee wake me. And it’s a full blown miracle if I am able to fall back to sleep again after waking.
I’m on a mission to figure out how to sleep through the night at age…not 8 anymore. A few days ago I shared how I cozied up this bedside corner. You’ll notice I added an essential oil diffuser. For those that have dry sinuses during the night, a diffuser near the bed is a must. We use a mixture of lavender and frankincense oils which are said to promote sleep in our diffuser nightly.
I also mixed up a concoction that I call “sleepytime spray”. I spray it on the pillows at bedtime. One of the ingredients is vodka which evaporates quickly so the pillows do not feel damp. The cheaper the vodka, the better. It’s the same vodka I use to make my homemade vanilla.
In a 3.4 ounce spray bottle, add 1/2 teaspoon vodka, 5 drops of polysorbate 80, essential oil(s) of choice and then top off with distilled water. I used 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Any single or combination of oils can also be used. Lavender, peppermint, ylang ylang, bergamot, sandalwood, eucalyptus and chamomile are some essential oils that are said to assist with sleep. I do have a link for Young Living essential oils if you would like to give any a try.
Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier that helps the essential oil(s) mix thoroughly with the water. Otherwise, the oil will sit on top of the water. I used the same polysorbate 80 in my homemade rose bath salts.
I’m at the beginning stages of my deep sleep experiment. If I find other things that work, I’ll be sure to spread the word. Do you have any tips I can try? Please share!
